Full Set, Touch up, Mini...Oh! My!

The first step to ensuring a successful lash appointment is to make sure you are booking the proper service. Full set, half set, mini, touch-up plus, volume, classic— all of these terms can be confusing. Knowing the difference is indeed important. Let’s discuss how to determine what service you need and how to book it.

Classic Vs. Volume Set

Classic or volume refers to the density of your lash set. Classic lashes are applied in 1:1 ratio, with one extension being applied to each natural lash. A classic full set covers 90 to 100 percent of your natural lashes. A volume set covers 70 to 85 percent of your natural lashes. Volume lashes are applied in a fan and achieve a more dramatic look than a classic set which is designed to achieve a more natural look.

Touch Ups

Once you have received your full set, it is important to come in for regular touch ups. Which touch up appointment to set depends upon how much shedding you have experienced, how long it has been since your last appointment and how much coverage you are wanting to achieve. It is important to book the proper touch up if you want to maintain a full look. An easy way to determine which appointment you need is to acknowledge what your retention percentage is.

  • Mini Touch Up (60% retention): This session takes place no more than 2 weeks after the previous session

  • Full Touch Up (40 to 60% retention): This session takes place 2 to 4 weeks after the previous session, depending upon how much shedding has taken place.

  • Touch Up Plus (30 to 40% retention): This session takes place 3 to 4 weeks after the previous session, depending upon how much shedding has taken place

Time Vs. Retention

Time between sessions and retention rate are both important factors to consider when booking your appointment. Too much time between sessions increases your likelihood to need a fuller touch up or even a whole new set. However, retention is a greater factor. Everyone’s shed cycle differs. If you are someone who sheds more than the average person, you may need to get touch ups more frequently than someone who does not shed as much. Proper cleaning and care after an appointment will help you become more aware of how quickly you shed and how often you might need to schedule your touch ups.

If you are ever uncertain as to which appointment you might need, do not hesitate to contact your lash tech. Send them a clear picture and ask them which service they’d recommend you book. They’ll love you for it. It helps them schedule and service you properly (and also prevents any potential sticker shock that could occur from needing a fuller touch up than you thought). Everyone’s goal is to see you leave (and return) with lashes that are as full and beautiful as possible.
